Superstars of the week 15th and 22nd March

This Superstar was chosen for a fantastic improvement in her reading and phonics skills, something noticed by all the adults who work with her! Great listening and hard work has helped her achieve this!

This Superstar was also chosen for improved phonics skills and for improving his reading stamina during some recent reading comprehensions which were quite a challenge! He never gave up and kept on trying his best and due to this, he showed a great understanding!

More from Book week!

Look at our wonderful Book Week costumes!
Can you tell which characters we are?

Ready for our assembly to show off our costumes!

More dinosaur activities back in class!

Sharing books with our reading partners!

We were delighted to invite the talented actors of Hobgoblin Theatre Company to perform on Friday morning. The children watched a humorous performance of the Frog Prince.

The children also participated in a drama workshop. Their task was to think about how different fairy tale characters might express themselves. The children  posed as parts of an enchanted forest and a variety of good and evil characters.

For more pictures of the Hobgoblin workshop with Year1,  see 1P's blog post 'Book Week 2018' on  http://mrspagestanley.blogspot.co.uk/

Homework over the holidays.

Homework over the holidays:
All children have been asked to practice reading and spelling the common tricky words they have been given in phonics.

Mrs Greatrex’s, Mrs Connor’s/Mrs Eaves’s and Mrs Fearon’s/Mrs Woolley’s phonics groups have also been given revision booklets to work through. The children have been asked to complete as much as possible over the holidays and return with it after Easter so we can see what they have done.

The children in Mrs Page’s phonics group have been asked to continue to play with the games and activities she has given out in recent weeks to practice their sounds.
Thank you to all parents and families with their ongoing support with homework and spellings – it really is making a difference!

London's burning!

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service
Visit Stanley

The Fire Brigade came into school on Tuesday to talk to us about fire safety and what the emergency services use today. We compared the equipment that is used today with what was available in 1666 during the time of the Great Fire of London.

In order for children to understand how quickly fire spreads and the important role of the Fire Service, we recreated part of Pudding Lane from the Great Fire of London on our playground.

Take a look at our video below.

Other Book Week activities...20/03/18

Yesterday the children took part in a rotation of book related activities in the classroom, hall and library.

In the hall, the children played lots of book related games such as character matching pairs, snakes and ladders and used their role play skills and puppets to act out well known stories.
They also played 'guess my character' headbands.

In the library, Mrs Greatrex and Mrs Page read some stories to the children.

In the classroom, 1G played a book quiz with teams scoring well!

Can you try the quiz yourself at home?

Just another day...

It is possible that today, your child returned home full of stories of stomping dinosaurs, scared teachers and mystery objects left around school.

Please do not be alarmed.
It was just another day at school.

As part of our Book Week activities, the chldren became researchers. Where did this creature come from? What does it want? What evidence was left behind?

Some said it was a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Others insisted that it was a Triceratops.
What do you think it is?

Our Year 1 Make Space has been transformed into a Dinosaur Research Lab, full of non-fiction and fiction books to fire up the imagination!

The task today was to investigate which type of dinosaur visited Stanley, what it eats, its habits and the possible reasons for it visiting.

The researchers in 1G took this job very seriously and even at playtime, they found signs (and tastes!) of dinosaur footprints. Some said they found dinosaur scratches on the walls, while others even claimed they saw evidence of serious 'trampling' on our bushes!

We have been looking at information about dinosaur eggs as one was found on the grounds and is now securely stored in our Research Lab. We discussed that often dinosaurs are named after their place of discovery, e.g. the Stanleysaurus.

Children have been sketching what they think the 'Stanleysaurus' egg will look like when it hatches.

We hope that after all this imaginative book week work, everyone has a good night's sleep.

Science - testing the best materials to make an umbrella.

In Science, we have been investigating materials and their properties. Today, the children had to investigate the best material to use to make an umbrella for a teddy.

We discussed the fact that umbrellas need to be waterproof which means the water will run off the material or make a puddle rather than soaking in or dripping through.

The children had to drip water onto various materials (of their choice) and record what happened.

Which material do you think worked the best? Tell me in the comments 1G.
