What else have we been up to in 1G?

We have been consolidating our addition and subtraction skills with various matching games and activities.

We have been learning about UK cities and played a game of 'Mapingo' to help us read and remember the names of some. 1G - see if you can tell your parents the names of any cities you can remember?
Can you remember any differences between a town and a city? (Clue: What were you sketching in your Art books?)

In Guided Reading, we continue to develop our phonics and spelling skills by making and sorting  words from stories.

In Literacy, we have been helping the Zoo to find their missing animals by writing 'wanted posters' with lots of information about various animals. We needed to help people look for them so knowing what they look like, what they like to eat and where they live in the wild was helpful. Here are some good examples to read.

I wonder if they will ever get found....!

A pretty sight!

In Science, we have been studying the weather and have kept track of it with a classroom weather chart in the form of a pictogram. Strangely, on Thursday we noticed that we hadn't seen a rainbow (whilst in school) and then suddenly on Friday, we saw a huge, beautiful rainbow right outside our classroom which we had to go outside and admire (even though we did get a bit wet!). We know that rainbows are formed when we have sun and rain at the same time.

Superstar of the week 23/11/17

This superstar was chosen for being extremely helpful and kind, always offering to help others. A lovely quality to have!

Moving Pictures!

In DT, we are learning the different skills to make different types of moving pictures. This week we were making sliding pictures and pivot and lever pictures. Can you see how they work? See if your child can make one at home to show you.

Addition and subtraction number sentences

In maths we have been working on our addition and subtraction skills. In these pictures, the children worked in groups to make addition and subtraction number sentences from the cards.

Giving and Receiving!

In RE we have been thinking about how it feels to give and receive gifts. This is because Christians believe Jesus was a special gift to them from God. We made each other rocket bookmarks last week so that we could give them to our friends to show them how special they are to us. The children said they felt 'proud of their work' and 'happy they made it' which tells us that sometimes the giving is just as important as the receiving!

Superstar of the week 16/11/17

This week our superstar was chosen for good listening and following of instructions. Excellent!

Discovery Time 17/11/17

We are now having Discovery Time every fortnight, adding the total number of marbles over 2 weeks together. This week 1G earned the most marbles in year 1, giving us a winning total of 41 minutes.

We decided to have a crafty animal theme for Discovery Time this week and the children have contributed towards a big display which will go up in the coat peg area.

See the pictures below to see which activities the children chose to do.

What else have we been up to in 1G this week?

In Maths we have been finding number pairs to 10 and 20. These children were matching different amounts of Numicon pictures to make 20.

Challenge: Can any children comment on this post any pairs that add to make 20?

In RE, we all made each other a rocket bookmark as a gift. We have discussed how it feels to give and receive gifts and the importance of being grateful and polite for any gifts we receive.
the children will be bringing these home to use this week.

Year 1's Zoo Trip 14/11/17

Last week year 1 visited the Zoo as part of their science topic where they are learning about different animals. In my absence, I was told the children were very well behaved and they were able to tell me lots of information they had gathered about the animals they saw.

During the education sessions the children looked at places where different animals live and how their bodies are adapted to these environments. They told me that they liked being able to feel and touch the fox fur, elephant tusk and Lizard!

What else have we been doing in 1G since coming back after half term?

In computing, we went on a maths programme and practiced our counting in 2's, 5's and 10's by answering missing numbers in sequences. This was a fun way to extend our learning into other area's of the curriculum.

In guided reading, we have been spotting tricky words and then attempting to make them with magnets/letter beads. This is a task which might be fun to practice at home with school reading books!

In science, we have been finding out information about different animal kingdoms and then sorting different species into the correct categories. I hope we can remember some of this information for our zoo trip and try to categorise the animals as we see them.

We have a new challenge for our continuous provision areas this term. To encourage the children to access all of the areas, each one now has a coloured lolly stick, which the children collect (honestly) after they have completed a task.

The idea is to 'COLLECT A RAINBOW' during their choosing time over a 2 week period.

So far, it has been working well and I am seeing more of the areas in the classroom used. Below are some pictures to show the kind of tasks the children can choose to complete. They are designed to challenge and reflect the current curriculum we are studying.

Ask your child if they have managed to collect a rainbow this week!

History Day 2017

On Friday, we celebrated our History Day and went back in time to the decades of the 2 World Wars during the 1910's - 1940's.

During the morning, we attended an assembly where we talked about the loss and sacrifice given by many during the Wars and held a minute silence in respect of the fallen. We discussed the symbol of the poppy and how we use it on Remembrance day which is on the 11th of November every year.

We dressed up in typical clothes from that era including soldiers, nurses, evacuee children and land girls.

We learned lots of facts about evacuation and tried to put ourselves into the shoes of those children, thinking about what would be our priorities for packing our tiny suitcases.

In PE we joined forces with 2G and did some country dancing which was popular for children during the War. The children did a fantastic job learning so many moves in a short space of time!

We also made a moving poppy picture using our developing cutting and sticking skills.

What a busy day!

1G what was your favourite part of the day? Can you tell me anything you have learned in the comments of this post?

superstar of the week 9/11/17

This Superstar was chosen for all round superstar sensible behaviour and work but also because of his polite, pleasant nature and infectious smile! Fantastic!
